Sometimes, it is useful for health professionals to have a guide as to what peak flow could be expected from each individual, if they didnt have asthma. Predictive normal values have been calculated for women and men of different ages and heights, and have been adapted (with agreement from the original authors) for use with the new eu scale en 23747 peak flow meters.

Peak flow is a measure of how quickly you can blow air out of your lungs. You measure it by blowing as hard as you can into a small hand-held device called a peak flow meter. If you manage to blow out quickly and forcefully, you should get a high score.

Normal readings of peak flow meters depend on a persons age, sex, and height. For example, a 30 year old male that is 510 tall should have a reading close to 622 liters per minute. Appendix 2 tables of normal peak flow values note that the values shown are the average normal values for healthy persons of a given age and height. There will always be a range of normal values not everyone can be expected to have exactly the same value.

This standardised peak flow chart allows the doctor and the person with asthma to recognise the pattern of that persons asthma over time and to identify flare-ups early. Measurement of peak expiratory flow gives an idea of how narrow or obstructed a persons airways are by measuring the maximum (or peak) rate at which they can blow air into a peak flow meter after a deep breath.

You need to check your peak flow every day, twice a day to get a useful pattern of scores at the same times of day, in the morning and in the evening before you take your asthma medicine otherwise it will change the score using your best effort each time you blow into the meter so youre comparing like with like using the same peak flow meter each time.

Write down your peak flow number in your asthma diary every day. A decrease in peak flow of 20 to 30 percent of your personal best may mean the start of an asthma episode. Your asthma action plan may tell you to take your peak flow reading more often and to adjust your medicines.

The range of normal peak flow readings is published on a chart, and doctors and nurses refer to the chart when they check your peak flow reading. In healthy people, peak flow readings vary slightly from time to time.

The average peak flow chart is great for all-round reference, showing the average peak flow for children and adolescents in one table, and separate tables for adult males and adult females. Regular use of the charts should help you learn to recognize the patients asthma pattern over time.
