The husbands, wives and children of Whitehall s most powerful mandarins were also given tickets to events like the Olympics opening ceremony, RHS Chelsea Flower Show, music recitals and operas on 35 occasions. PricewaterhouseCoopers and Deloitte, the leading accountancy firms, and BAE Systems were all in the top five organisations providing hospitality to mandarins, the National Audit Office found. The auditors said that acceptance of hospitality had to be in the "interests of departments and government objectives", however it had "identified some examples where this might not have happened". These included "tickets to, or hospitality at, sporting events eight occasions, including four professional football matches ". Other examples included "tickets to, or hospitality at, cultural events, including private viewings of art exhibitions, museum exhibitions, a movie premiere and a concert at the O2", although in this case the official "did not in fact attend the concert".

Have never been to the Chelsea Garden Show, I have always dreamed of going but not yet. I have been twice to the Hampton Court Flower Show. Liked it the first time, but the second time it was a bit too crowded for me and starting to get commerical. It would be great to have a look like the royals do, with nobody pushing and shoving. Have always loved the Chelsea Flower Show Even met our own Jamie Durie and his entry was just magnificent..

It was absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately it was stinking hot and not many seats to sit down on in the shade, and to top it off my Sister was having trouble with her dickey knee and hip and we had to call her husband to come and pick us up early, hence we did not see everything. Bringing awareness of the beauty of nature. Mary grew up on a small mixed farm in Wexford, in the south of Ireland and eventually set up her own company designing gardens in Dublin. A few years later, and having lost the will to live from constantly creating modern gardens, she realized that she could no longer continue shaping land in the same way and thus re-imagined her work to become nature rather than human centered. Click here to sign up for podcast updates. She brought her new, still relatively unformed ideas to be showcased at the Chelsea flower show in London where she achieved a gold medal, unusual at the time for a first-time effort. Since that time, Mary has built up quite a cult following in the world of garden design and is considered unique in her field. She eventually decided it was time to rethink the whole relationship we had with land and re-examine what it truly means to design in harmony with nature. In This Podcast:

This time the issue is the cost of RHS membership. This is a little close to my heart because the Veddw used to be a Partnership Garden. Some gardens are commercial and you have to exit through the shop, where the money does perhaps come in. But we only sell our own books and some cards — to some visitors. This is expensive even if you have a job well above minimum wage, that is. I called to find out if they offered reduced rates for the unemployed or low waged. But the focus is on big gardens, people with money.

A full list of the free meals and tickets to sporting and arts events that have been accepted by senior civil servants, revealing the extent to which lobbyists hope to influence Whitehall mandarins was published for the first time today. The list, released by the Cabinet Office , reveals that some of Whitehall s top officials are inundated with offers of hospitality from big business, lobbyists and pressure groups. Civil servants at DBERR and the Ministry of Defence declared the greatest number of freebies in — several hundred per department, while their counterparts at the Department for International Development went to just one free dinner and two exhibitions. The majority of the 2, or so listings are for free dinners, lunches and breakfasts, but many Whitehall departments received free hospitality at the Chelsea flower show and others went on boat trips or attended the opera, concerts and football or cricket matches. Sir Gus O Donnell, the cabinet secretary and head of the home civil service, declared 10 offers of hospitality including the Chelsea flower show, Wimbledon, opera and a football match. Among the more curious entries is that of Beverley Shears, the justice department s director of human resources, who went to illusionist Paul McKenna s event on neurolinguistic programming — a behaviour therapy. Big businesses were the most common hosts, particularly for those departments that hold sway over lucrative contracts. Senior civil servants are required to declare any free hospitality they receive, beyond incidentals such as tea and coffee. The civil service code states: Each department has its own set of guiding principles.
By Tony Hazell. Financial journalists probably enjoy more than our fair share of corporate hospitality.
We are delighted to announce that its cutting-edge range was awarded for quality, innovation and environmental sustainability! Optigrow is a revolutionary, non-chemical seed priming treatment that uses only water and air to get the seed biologically ready for germination, breaking dormancy prior to use. It is then quickly dried back to a storable state for packing, just like any other seed. The treatment means seeds wake up and get underway within hours of hitting the soil. Not only do Optigrow seeds promise superfast germination, they are also proven to produce vigorous seedlings able to out-grow competing weeds. Extensive trialling of Optigrow seeds under garden conditions has consistently produced more uniform crops, better harvests and quality vegetables. There is also evidence that germination becomes possible under a wider range of conditions, allowing gardeners to sow Optigrow seeds in colder, warmer and drier conditions than the ideal. The judges said: Anything that removes disappointment in seeds germination it to be welcomed. Seed priming has been used in professional growing for many years but launch of this range marks a real step change in the seed market.

The investigation by the BMJ has prompted concern that the tobacco industry was trying to lobby MPs to reject proposals to introduce plain cigarette packaging. The House of Commons held a vote on this in March and overwhelmingly approved the move, which will mean plain packaged cigarettes will appear on shelves by next year. But 20 of the MPs who accepted free hospitality from Japan Tobacco International - more than half — voted against plain packaging. His constituency has one of the highest rates of lung cancer and smoking-related deaths in the country - nearly double the national average. He said he accepted the free tickets because the tobacco industry had boosted employment in his area and he had long opposed plain packaging because it will lead to fraud. Lung cancer is one of the biggest killers in the UK and causes 35, deaths a year. Around ten million adults in the UK smoke, although rates have declined substantially in recent decades.
